PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
New Parking Lot Signs
We
recently added new signage to our pick up that we hope will make the daily
pick up and drop off go more smoothly. The first sign addresses our day care
vans. We are going to have day care vans load and unload students at the far
west side of the first drive through. Because they carry more kids, the vans
tend to take more time than cars to load and unload. We hope that by moving
the vans farther forward, the entrance will not be so congested. Our student
patrol will help students to and from the building if needed.
The
second sign addresses the inner parking lot. Due to the narrow entrance,
access to the inner parking lot is often blocked by cars waiting to pull
forward to load or unload students. The newly installed sign asks drivers to
wait at a point until space is available along the inner curb for loading and
unloading. By waiting at the designated spot, the entrance is then available
for those wishing to park in the lot.
Remember,
safety is more important than convenience. Always drive slowly and work
together to keep our kids safe.
GIFTED QUEST PROGRAM
The Quest Program for Highly
Capable Students in grades 1-6 is now accepting applications for the
2005-2006 school year. The elementary Quest program offers two options for
students who demonstrate superior ability, who exceed grade level standards
in literacy and math, and who exhibit exceptional creativity in the
classroom. Students who qualify for the Enrichment pull-out program attend
their home school four days a week and a pull-out enrichment classroom one
day a week. Students in the full-time program are enrolled in an accelerated,
self-contained classroom for the full day, five days a week. More information
can be found in the Quest information packet that is available at all
elementary schools, on the District website (www.lwsd.org
under Highly Capable Programs), and at the Quest Office [(425) 702-3238 or Quest@lwsd.org) on the third floor of the
Resource Center. Also, all parents
interested in the Quest Program or with children already in Quest may attend
the Quest Parent Forum on Thursday, December 9, 2004, from 7:00-8:30 PM in
the LWSD Resource Center in the Redmond Town Center. This forum, sponsored by
the Gifted Education Advisory Council (GEAC), will explain more specifically
what Quest offers to highly qualified, academically gifted children.
LUNCH ACCOUNTS
Please
keep a positive balance in your child’s lunch account and don’t wait for a
green envelope to come home notifying of a shortage. Green envelopes not only
cost money to purchase, but it takes time to write them out. Lunches cost
$2.00 per day, unless your child qualifies for the Reduced Lunch Program.
Milk or juice is $.50 and is included with the cost of a lunch. The cost for
an extra milk or juice, whether or not your child is on the Reduced or Free
Lunch Program, is $.50. The cost for an extra entrée is $1.00. If your
child’s account seems to be spent faster than you think it should, ask your
child if he/she is buying an extra milk, juice, or entrée. Please make checks
payable to LWSD or Thoreau El. and write your child’s name in the lower left
corner of the check. If it is more convenient for you to put money in your
child’s account by using your credit card, please call 425 702-3393. Thank you!

STUDENT - -
PLEASE HELP US DESIGN THE NEW THOUREAU SHIRTS!!
Thoreau is ready for a new frog
shirt and we would like to have the students help design it! We are looking
for both a cute frog design and new logo. Any student interested in
submitting a design and/or logo, please draw your picture using 4 colors or
less and submit your design to the Thoreau office no later than Monday,
November 29. We will then select from the entries to create the new Thoreau
shirts. We know there are many talented artists in our school and we can’t
wait to make this year’s Thoreau shirts something extra special! If you have
any questions, please contact 206 321-5168. Thank you! –Karen Ulbrickson
