PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Veteran’s Day

We are in the final stages of planning a Veteran’s Day assembly for students on November 10, 9:45am to 10:15am. As the assembly will be for all students, it will be held in the gym/commons. The program will focus on honoring Veterans. The website www.va.gov/vetsday/ offers several ideas of enriching Veteran’s Day for families, if you are looking for resources to help your child(ren) develop an appreciation for the service provided by our nation’s veterans.

Is Your Child Getting Enough Sleep?

The following information was excerpted from the Parents Journal Interview with Dr. Jodi Nindell, Associate Director of the Sleep disorder Center at he Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

“A bedtime routine is key and it should exclude television and include a bedtime story. If your child is not getting enough sleep, he/she may be adversely affected in 4 important ways.”

1.    Mood: A tired child…

a.     Is more irritable, cranky, whiny, moody

b.      Has less frustration tolerance

2.      Lack of sleep affects learning…

a.       Shorter attention span

b.      Difficulty staying on task

c.       Difficulty with memory skills

d.      Difficulty with problem solving

3.      Lack of sleep affects behavior…

a.       Child more likely to misbehave

b.      Child likely to be more aggressive

c.       Child likely to be more hyperactive

d.      Child likely to be less cooperative

4.      Lack of sleep affects health…

a.       Lowers immune function (child more likely to get colds, flu etc.

b.      Important growth hormones affected (growth hormones secreted during sleep)

Here are the recommended hours of sleep by age of child:

            Age                              Sleep Amount

Newborns                                14 to 18 hours per day

Infants (6-12 months)               13 to 14 hours per day

Toddlers (1-3 years old)           12 to 14 hours per day

Preschool (3-5 years old)         11 to 12 hours per day

Elementary School                    9  to 11 hours per day

Middle School                          9 to 10 hours per day

High School                              9 hours per day

NEW SOUND SYSYTEM

A huge “Thank You!” goes to the Thompson family, whose donation, in memory of their daughter Kara, has helped to fund the purchase and installation of a terrific sound system in the Commons of Thoreau. Friday, at the Aloha Dance, will be the first official use of the new system and one of Kara’s favorite songs will be played to honor the memory of Kara.

LUNCH

Please remember to keep your child’s lunch account with a positive balance. The price of a lunch is $2.00 and it comes with milk or juice. If only milk or juice is purchased, the price is $.50. You may send cash or a check to school or you may call the district, 425 702-3393, and put money on their account by using your charge card.

HONOR CHOIR

On Saturday, November 6, at 1:00pm, the Thoreau singers will be performing outside of the Mark’s Hallmark Store at the Upper Totem Lake Shopping Mall. Stop by and enjoy a terrific performance!
