PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Thanks!

The Ice Cream Social and Information Night was a great success! Thanks are in order to Denice Loken and Kathy Strasbourg and their crew for organizing the event. We had planned to use the microphone to introduce the many opportunities for kids at Thoreau and in the greater community, but this didn’t work. I wanted to take a line or two to promote our after school Study Club supervised by Mrs. Guthrie. This is new. The idea came from our SIP brainstorming meeting held last January. Those in attendance wanted to try a Study Club to support families in the area of homework help. The Study Club is fee based, $10 dollars per session. Each session will be four to five weeks in length. Students meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:25 to 4:30. So for $10, your child can receive up to 10 hours of assistance (about $1.00 per hour- Quite a bargain!). Please contact Polly Blanchard for registration information if interested.

Our Math Work Team wants to provide weekly tips to parents on how to develop mathematical thinking in children. Often, the tips show just how easy and fun it is to reinforce math in the home.

Math Tip of the Week – Primary Students: Count Objects- All kinds of Objects. Intermediate Students: Use math terms whenever possible i.e. I am going to divide the pie into fourths, or sixths and then each can either one fourth or one sixth of the pie.

Boys and Girls Club Summer Camp says Thanks! This summer, our school hosted a summer camp for students. On Tuesday of this week, the director of the Kirkland Boys and Girls Club gave our school a nice plaque with a word of thanks. The plaque has a picture of the summer campers. I’ll put the plaque in one of the glass display cases by the gym. The summer camp was well run and the campers extremely well behaved.

ORCHESTRA

Intermediate orchestra has begun and will meet Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 7:50AM-8:40AM at Juanita High School.  Parents need to drop students off at 7:50am and a school bus will transport them back to Thoreau.

KISS A FROG??!

Hop to it! Collect pledges and donations and win great prizes! Yes!  You heard your kids correctly.  Principal Roetcisoender has challenged the students to raise a total of $17,500 by October 26, and if they do, he will kiss a frog!  In the past few years the students raised $18,000, and while we have somewhat fewer students this year, $17,500 is a realistic goal!  We appreciate your assistance in helping your students raise money.  Please remember to wait until September 28 (Tuesday) before money is sent in.  Money can be sent in every Tuesday in October.  Thanks!  -Ribbet Run Committee

STUDENT BANK DAYS

Please, we need your help! We need two more volunteers to sign up and we can get our Student Banking Program up and running for this school year. If you would be able to volunteer some time during the student lunches for one Wednesday a month, or you would be interested in hearing more about the program, please call Nancy Holden, 425 823-2815.
