Dear Parents,
I am happy to announce I’ve found a way to complete a requirement for my Professional Certification class AND keep in contact with my darling students throughout the end of the year! I am working on an assignment they call “Research Action Plan.” It’s basically anything in my classroom I want to change/improve. I have decided to try and improve student conventions (i.e. CUPS) in their daily writing.
I am doing two things: 1. I am sending a letter each week that Mr. Cornwall is copying off for each student, as well as making an overhead. He will go over the letter (that contains various CUPS mistakes) and edit the letter together as a whole group. 2. I am having the students write letters to me in the Word program the first part of their Monday computer class. This gives them an authentic reason to write, and working in the Word program is part of their 2nd grade technology requirement, as well.
My goal is that through their weekly practice of writing me letters on a program that shows them most of their conventions mistakes, plus the weekly editing process, that there will be improvement in their final letter I’ll have them write me without the computer reminders.
I have tallied some of their conventions mistakes from pre-spring daily work, and am currently tallying mistakes from current letters. I will then evaluate their final letter to determine if authentic weekly letters in the Word program helped them to be more conscious of mistakes when not using the computer.
I wanted to fill you in on this latest plan of action! We actually began letter writing the end of April, and I must say it brings tears to my eyes. I truly miss each and every one of my students. They are writing the sweetest letters, and tell me things are truly going well. I wish the best to you all.
Thanks for your support,
--Mrs. Wavra
