I am not exactly sure how I got here…
This summer I had packed up the minivan and headed to a
wedding in Northern California fully content with the fact that I would be
returning to my position at Apollo Elementary. Not wanting to miss an
opportunity for sight-seeing, my family and I took the long route to find the
strangely elusive grove of Redwood trees along the California coast. And find
it, we did.
We had thought about stopping off for a couple of days
along the Oregon coast, but abandoned that idea since we were all tired and
other plans were in place for when we returned. We arrived home early Monday
morning. Upon checking our messages, one from a representative of the Lake
Washington School District clearly stood out. The call was from the previous
Thursday evening asking if I would be interested in interviewing for the Rush
principal position on Tuesday.
My first reaction was, “Why the rush?”
My second reaction was “Tuesday!”
Approximately a week later, the offer to become principal
at Benjamin Rush Elementary was extended. What a difference a week makes!
…but I am glad to be here…
Benjamin Rush Elementary has a stellar reputation as a
special place to learn. This rings true whether speaking to staff, current and
former parents, district personnel, parents and/or the greater community (I even
asked friends who are realtors and they returned the same verdict).
It is obvious that we have an excellent teaching staff
dedicated to children. It is obvious that we have outstanding support staff
that cares about this place. It is obvious that we have a community that
believes in the importance of education. It is obvious that I need to do my
part to reach such lofty standards set by those who preceded me.
…and I will do my best.
