       About The Neighborhood          Schoolhouse

The Neighborhood Schoolhouse

is a community learning and family support center at Redmond Elementary School.  Six days of the week during the school year, Redmond families, adults and children engage in a variety of before and after school classes and evening activities.  NSH is a gathering place for neighbors to experience lifelong learning as well as a family support center, connecting people to necessary community resources.

The Neighborhood Schoolhouse (NSH) originated as a “Breaking the Boundaries” project in 1994 by the City of Redmond and was funded for one year by a United Way grant.  Presently, NSH is funded by the collaborative effort of the City of Redmond, Lake Washington School District, Microsoft Real Estate Division, the Orinoco Foundation and community grants.  Friends Of Youth acts as the fiscal agent and administrator.

In 2006-07 school year, NSH offered 14 programs to more than 600 people with 46% of the enrollment from schools other than Redmond Elementary.  Approximately 140 children participate weekly in the NSH after school programs.

The Neighborhood Schoolhouse classes and activities are scheduled to follow the Lake Washington School District calendar.  On school holidays NSH will be closed.

Registration Process

NSH classes are open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Class size is limited so that each student will receive individual attention.  Many of our children’s classes fill quickly.  You may mail your registrations to our office, drop them off at Redmond Elementary School, room 124, or register in person. All children’s after school classes require pre-registration.  Fees are payable to the instructors or NSH/Friends of Youth.

Reduced Tuition Scholarships

are offered to low-income families who would otherwise not be able to take a class.  Please check the appropriate box on your registration form for reduced tuition.

Full Scholarships

are offered to children whose families are unable to afford the reduced tuition amount. A family is eligible for a full scholarship if they answer yes to any of the following questions:

1. Do you qualify for free or reduced breakfast/lunch program?

2. Do you have a Public Assistance Medical Card?

3. Are you a single parent who is unemployed?

To request a full scholarship for your child or family, please contact the Neighborhood Schoolhouse Coordinator at 425-702-3409 no later than one week before the class begins. All scholarship requests are awarded on a first come, first serve basis.  Scholarship awards are limited to one (1) class per child per quarter.  If we are unable to meet your scholarship request, we will notify you by phone.

Transportation

Thanks to the in kind donation of van use by the City of Redmond, The Neighborhood Schoolhouse will provide transportation at no cost to students from Rockwell, Einstein and Mann Elementaries who sign up for classes offered immediately after school at Redmond Elementary. This service is provided on a limited, first–come, first serve basis.  Parents are responsible for transportation home after the classes.  If you need transportation, please indicate this on your registration form.

Become a Friend of NSH

This year marks the twelfth school year for NSH.  Changing economic times challenge the sustainability of our services and our ability to pay our expenses.  To meet these challenges, NSH invites the community to “Become A Friend of NSH” by donating to NSH/Friends of Youth.  Your donation provides scholarships for needy children; sustains free programs and provides after school snacks.

For more information and/or to “Become A Friend of NSH”, please call 425-702-3409 or  email: jradley@lwsd.org

Youth and Adult volunteers are needed to tutor/assist children in our children’s after school classes and to help with our adult/family evening programs.  Students can receive community service credit and do senior projects with NSH.  Call NSH for information — 425-702-3409.
