Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the start of another school year! I am looking forward to meeting each of you in the near future. The following information will help the year get started on the right foot.
Box of 24 crayons 1 wide ruled spiral notebook
Pencils Scissors
Pink eraser Colored pencils (optional)
1” three hole binder Box of tissues Pencil box (8x 5 x 2 ˝) Glue Stick
Small self-contained pencil sharpener
2 folders with pockets on the bottom
Snack for the class (to be replenished throughout school year)
One bottle of hand sanitizer would also be appreciated! J
Many children want to share a treat with the class on their birthdays. This is entirely optional! If you drop off or send the treats in the morning, we will enjoy them during the day when we have a break. Please, no beverages or cake that needs to be cut! Also, it is school policy not to hand out invitations at school unless all of the girls or all of the boys are invited. This policy prevents hurt feelings for those who are left out.
Each student has a pocket on a chart. The pocket is filled with a green, yellow, and red card. Each day every student begins the day with the green card showing. If a behavior problem arises during the day, the child is asked to change his/her card to the next color. The progression works like this:
Green – All expectations met
Yellow – Warning, 5 minutes of recess lost
Red – Miss a 15 minute recess / note or phone call home
Each child will keep a behavior sheet (STAR CHART) on his / her desk. At the end of the day, he/she will color a star that represents the behavior of the day. Each Friday, the behavior sheet will come home for your inspection. Please go over the sheet with your child, sign it, and return it to school each Monday.
To keep you informed about weekly curriculum, important dates, and sharing themes, a brief newsletter will be sent home every Thursday. In addition, please check your child’s HOME folder each night for teacher notes and completed curriculum, then send it back each day. This newsletter is also published weekly on our class’ web page (www.redel.lwsd.org). Most community flyers will be sent home each Thursday.
HOMEWORK
Reading: Every child in our school has a weekly Reading Log. Each day, Monday – Thursday, your child is to read, or be read to, (depending on skill level) for a minimum of 15 minutes. The book title and a reflection on the book are written. At the beginning of the year, pictures or “Magic Writing” (inventive spelling) may be used. Reflections may also be dictated and written by an adult. As your child develops, more writing than drawing, and more details, will be expected from them. In the front of the Reading Log, there is a list of reading prompts to use for reflections. Please send the entire Reading Log to school every Friday. The children that return their log enter their name in a weekly drawing for a book! J
Math: Math papers will come home on Monday, and are due each Friday.
Spelling: Weekly spelling tests will begin in October, with the majority of the practice being done at home. Spelling tests are given on Fridays.
In addition, unfinished work will also be sent home to be completed and returned.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, but enough to get you started. More will come Curriculum Night, September 14th. Hope to see you then!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns now, or anytime during the year, please feel free to call me at school, 702-3419. My voice mail is always available! E-mailing us is also an efficient way to reach me quickly (aclark@lwsd.org). Please let me know if you have an e-mail address that you want me to use to contact you.
Sincerely,
Amanda Clark
