PTSA Membership

Why join our PTSA?

Your membership in PTSA has a direct impact on your children and the quality of their school. PTSA has the ability, more than any other organization, to make a better place for your children to learn. PTSAs do this by addressing the needs of their individual schools. By becoming a PTSA member, you can help identify those needs and develop solutions that may include: making the school safer, becoming more technologically advanced, being more tolerant to others' differences and bringing enriched educational opportunities to the school.

Another important reason is that several studies conducted on the relationship between student performance and parent involvement in education have shown that when parents are involved in education, student academic performance improves. Involvement in PTSA allows you not only to be involved in your child's education, but also allows you to get to know their teachers better and become more familiar with their school. By becoming a member and attending meetings you are showing your children that you believe their school and their education is important.

Plus, only PTSA members receive a RJH Student Directory.  Click here to download a membership form.

PTSA Committees

2008-2009 PTSA Board of Directors and Committee Chairpersons

Want to be involved?

We have a variety of committees devoted to educational and extracurricular activities. There is still time to volunteer for many PTSA activities or in support of other school activities. Volunteer forms are available at the RJH Attendance Office or contact the president.

Redmond Junior High PTSA Committees

ASB Support:  Assist the ASB Advisor with the fall magazine drive and provide on-site help for lunchtime dance ticket sales, student elections, and other events.  Also, hand out class schedules twice each year.

Audit Committee:  Conduct biannual audit of the PTSA books (can be evening or weekend).  Three-person committee follows state PTSA guidelines and works with the Treasurer.

Dance Chaperone: Help provide supervision at one or more of the ASB and PTSA sponsored dances. You will rotate through assigned stations, work with a partner and your kids will not even know you're there!

Emergency Preparedness: Help coordinate and maintain RJH's emergency plan and supplies.

Grizzly Grams:  This program allows teachers to recognize student efforts/achievement by sending home a complimentary postcard.  Teachers write the cards, then PTSA volunteers address, stamp, and mail them.

Health Screening:  A one-time event in September or October to test vision and hearing of all students.  Instruction and supervision provided by LWSD nurses.

Hospitality:  This committee provides refreshments for after-school and evening events.

Legislative Action Alert Team:  Be part of the team that receives information and action items via e-mail about current legislative issues relayed from state-level and district-level PTSA boards and the Lake Washington Education Association by RJH Legislative

Library:  Help the Librarian with projects and collection maintenance on either a regular or as-needed basis.

Membership:  Assist with our annual membership drive and distribution of student directories in September/October.

Newsletter Distribution:  Assist newsletter editor in assembling and mailing the PTSA newsletter, which is published 4-5 times a year and is a vital communication link to parents, students and staff.

Ninth Grade Graduation:  Parents of 7th and 8th graders only are needed to provide refreshments and some supervision of event.  Celebration is in June.

Parent Education: Promote and coordinate parent education opportunities for RJH parents.

Parent Organizer: Program announcements and schedules for the school, district and PTSA from your home or office.

Photo Day:  Every student at RJH is photographed for student ID cards and district records.  Volunteers help on the day photos are taken early in September, and with re-take day a few weeks later.

Reflections:  This national PTSA-sponsored program recognizes student entries in literature, visual arts, photograph, and music.  Help coordinate submission of entries from RJH, and celebrate program participants at a reception.

Safe Arrival:  Work with the Attendance Office each morning to notify parents regarding student absences.  Volunteers are scheduled weekly, biweekly, or monthly as desired.

Special Needs:  Support RJH staff, educate community, and advocate for children and special needs issues at local and state levels.

Staff Appreciation:  This committee provides treats and fun for RJH staff throughout the year.

Student Directory:  This valuable booklet is available to PTSA members only.  Help gather necessary information for publication, and work with Membership committee for distribution.  Project is in September only.

Student Recognition:  RJH staff recognizes six teens as “Student of the Month.”  Volunteer needs may involve driving students, delivering meals or treats, or helping with on-site events.

Tutoring: No teaching experience necessary! Help students where it's really needed - tutoring, reading coach, WASL scribe, etc.
