Sketchbook Assignments

Students will be given 10 minutes at the beginning of class to work on their daily SB assignments, some students may need to work on sketches at home to develop acceptable imagery.
Sketchbooks will be collected approximately every 12 day and 10 sketches will be evaluated per collection. Entries MUST be sequential.

5 possible points are available per sketche. Requirements sketch # is visible
in lower right hand corne fo the pager, the entire picture plane is filled,
you used dark, contrasting lines and shapes,showed layering of images to create spatial relationships, you did not use words, cliché images, or cartoons designed.

 
 


1. Late one night an alien entered my uncle's bedroom and laid an egg on his pillow. Draw this.

2. After that egg experience, my uncle's hair completely fell out!
Illustrate this event.

3. Design a maze based on a theme.

4. Create a balanced composition of curved geometric shapes. Hide a person/figure
within this composition.


5. Where do you go when you die? Draw this place.

6. Using the space needle as the focus of your drawing - do something creative with today's sketch.

7. Imagine that you are lying on the floor in your closet. Draw what you would see.

8. Design a chair that you could stay in for weeks at a time. It should accommodate all of your personal needs; entertainment, hygiene etc... You may label it if you needed.

9. Create an unusual valentine drawing. Use an analogy or visual pun for heart.

10. Draw the ultimate useful tool.

11. Invert and illustrate an "Eccentric Analogy". Make 2 lists of words (must be nouns). Randomly
connect the lists. Illustrate one of the pairs.

12. Close your eyes and draw a random line or shape on your page. Now look at your line and turn it into an interesting drawing. Add details and shading.

13. Make a Vase-Face drawing.

14. A "New wave" bowl of soup. Invent your own veggies.

15. Design a mailbox based on a visual pun or an eccentric analogy.

16. "That was quite a stretch!". Draw what happened.

17. "In the eye of the beholder"

18. Give a headline to your sketch page - Illustrate the headline.

19. Design a new kid's toy that could be used in a bath tub.

20. Design your own theme sunglasses.

21. Where do you go when you die? Draw this place.

22. Do something creative with the dollar bill you are given.

23. Design your own futuristic home.

24. Through a crack in the wall I saw....

25. You are walking with a friend when suddenly they start to float away.

26. Finish this sentence then illustrate: "wouldn't it be strange if ___?"

27. Upon walking, you discover that you have become a bug.

28. There are 2 pills on the table, one will make you shrink, the other expand. Show what happens when you take one of them.

29. Hide a giant animal in landscape.

30. Design a unique bookmark that features your favorite kind of book to read.

31. Draw a large jar and fill it with something.

32. Invent and design a new ride for the Seattle Center based on a popular food.

33. I cracked an egg but didn't find a yoke inside. What did I find?

34. Using the theme of "spring", create a drawing using a visual pun of an analogy of spring.

35. Artist Henry Moore made a famous drawing titled "Sleepers in the Tubes." Draw your version.

36. Draw a word as the shape of an object. Ex: the word apple in the shape of an apple or apples
spelling out the word.

37. Draw a part of any object enlarged (a section of it) Shade accurately.

38. Look at all the sketches in your sketchbook. Choose the best one and draw it making it better/more creative/more detailed etc..

39. Draw a scene in which nothing in the picture is going the right direction.

40. Design a city made of food.

41. Draw what your pet (or someone's pet) would like to be doing if it could.

42. You are innocently drinking from a straw when the suction reverses. Draw what happens.

43. In 5 steps morph a letter into a recognizable object.

44. Her music assaulted my ears. What does the music look like.

45. Open your sketchbook - glue the black and white photo to the left page - create a contour drawing of it on the right.

46. You turned on your faucet this morning but something other than water came out (close up).

47. Draw what people look like without bones.

48.You have been walking along a beach on Orcas Island when you discover a bottle in the sand. You pick it up, and as you rub it, something comes out.

49. As you draw, objects come out of your pen rather than ink. Draw a close-up of this drawing.

50. Your hand is knitted from yarn and beginning to unravel.

51. Select one organic and one mechanical object. Draw them as accurately as possible. Notice the types of lines used.

52. Reverse the line quality for the drawing you created yesterday. Organic objects with mechanical lines and mechanical object with organic lines.

53. Create a 3D crown of silverware.

56.lChoose on of the following words. Look it up in the dictionary. Illustrate its meaning. Ambition,Empathy, Ambivalence

57. Simplify and adapt the letter forms of your initials into designs, shapes, circles, ovals, triangles, or rectangles. If you have two or more, combine them into one design/shape.

58. You will be given an object to draw. Draw it realistically, but place it in an impossible setting or
place that you wouldn't normally see it.


59. Design the urn or container that might house your ashes (in the distant future hopefully).

60. Arrange yourselves at your table so each person is looking at another's profile. Draw the silhouette on black paper, cut out and glue to your sketch page.

61. Look at the organic objects on your table, focusing on the texture. Choose 2, with very different, contrasting textures to draw. Try to represent the texture as best as you can in each.

62. Draw your organic object from your least favorite point of view.

63. Draw your organic object but instead of shading and illustrating the texture in the positive space, leave the area empty and fill just the negative space

64. Look very carefully at the organic object you have chosen for your abstraction project. Draw it to fill your sketchbook page from your favorite view.

65. Draw Thanksgiving dinner from the Turkey's point of view.

66. Air flights have become so dangerous that United Airlines has decided to make passenger
submarines to cross the oceans.

67. In Franz Kafka's story The metamorphosis, the main character wakes up one morning to find he's turned into a cockroach. Draw yourself metamorphosing into the thing you would most hate to be.

68. You are behind the wheel of the ultimate driving machine. Draw what you see.

69. Make up an invention that would enrich our lives but be impossible to realize. Ex: animal talk
translator or Finding Machine.

70. Divide your sketch page into 4 sections. Label: Spiritual, mental, physical, social. Draw a symbol for each of these that reflect your personality.

71. Design a stamp for the first letter mailed from Mars.

72. Invent a new sport and name it. Draw the object/equipment you need to play it.

73. Draw a conversation you are having with your best friend. Don't use letters or words and only draw the conversation, not the people.

74. Choose a part of your body to draw such as an elbow, finger, nose, etc. Enlarge it to become part of a landscape/place.

75. My uncle was bit by a snake. The next day all his hair fell out. Draw this and include his new wig.

76. Draw your winning costume for this years Halloween costume bash.

77. Finish the sentence and illustrate it. "Wouldn't it be a strange world if ________".

78. When you were last traveling in your teleporter, you were unaware that there was a _____* in it too. When you reached your destination, your molecular structure combined with the ____. Draw what you look like.

79. Attach a weird headline to your page and illustrate it.

80. Divide your sketchbook into 8 sections. Label sections: calm, angry, loud, chaotic, whimsical, sad, tense, organized. Use only line to illustrate each adjective.

81. You have been commissioned by Starbucks to design a new coffee cup. Draw yours.

82. Contemporary Artist Henry Moore made a drawing called "Sleepers in the tube." Draw a picture of your own that would fit this title.

83. Design a book for the autobiography you will write one day.

84. Create an imaginary landscape with part of your body.
