Studing the figure for gestural qualities and value

Students will create 10-15 large figure studies using a sumi brush and India ink to depict the varying values within the figure; calligraphic cross contour lines will be added next to enhance the movement and general gesture of the figure. These studies should fill the format with a figure that has correct figurative proportions. Work from life and study your model carefully, define the large areas of value before adding details. Each student will take turns holding 5-10 minutes poses. Use wider, bolder lines in areas of emphasis; where is the weight, where are the shadows? Calligraphic lines are smooth and flowing.
