Oil Pastel Portrait Process

Building Form Through Value Changes
Varied Stroke Application - No Blending

My Model, Judith

Use a medium value oil pastel
to lay in and establish basic
values

Use black to establish the
darkest and most contrasting
areas

Add color to your negative
space and continue
working on medium value
areas

To visually separate the
background from the foreground
a light overall value may be added

Add light values to light areas -
do not mix in dark avulsion light
areas

Mix with the oil pastel rather
than your fingers, vary your
stroke direction and pressure

No white of the paper should show
through the oil pastels - you may use
a palette knife to scrape off excess
oil pastel - adjust contrast for
maximum volume
