CONFLICT CONTRAST PAINTING

This sample is based on the following theme:

Tension/Cat vs. Peace/teacup

Part II: Contour Line Drawings

Use a #2 pencil to create 2 contour line drawings, each on its own sheet of paper.

Begin with the contour drawings - a contour line defines the edges of the object's planes. The edges are within the object as well as around the object.

The lines must be very smooth and connect back on each other - no dangling lines - no shading or fills at this point.

Enlarge your drawing to fill your format
Refine and smooth all lines
Trace over your pencil lines with your black pen

Cat

Cup/Peace

5 copies of each full format drawing

2 Reductions
1 Original
2 Enlargments

Give yourself plenty of size options so you will have an easier time when composing your image.

Part III: Composing your Conflict Drawing

Which Conflict Structures have you employed?

Is the emphasized minority obvious?

Part IV: Analogous Color - 5 in a row on the color wheel
Submit completed worksheet before proceeding with your painting

1.
Lay in the medium values (pure hues) for each square in the analogous color set

2. Shades - add black - dark values for shadows - areas farthest from the light source

3. Tints - add white for highlights - areas closest to the light source

Analogous Paintings by Artist - Alfredo Arreguin

Sample of Student Worksheet - student artists Ashley Biria

Analogous Colors - Work on gradual transitions from color to color and light to dark values - 5 neighbors on the color wheel

The background...
choose one of your 5 analogous colors, mixed with black to paint in the background. Dark values tend to recede and light, more intense color values move to the foreground.

Painting Work flow:
Wet into wet - Mixing paint while it is still wet
Wet on Dry - applying mixed color over a dry base layer - you may use gel medium to extend your paint and create transparencies.

The Under Painting...

...the idea is to deliver a transparent layer of medium value (no tints or shades) color to the entire subject so that the sketch shows through.
Mix your paint with gel medium to make it semi-transparent.

You may have 2 - 5 color analogous color schemes

One for your majority and the other for your minority

This is a fniished painting that was completed in a different 5 color
harmony than the preceeding samples. (Red-Blue)

Adding Contrast for 3 dimensionality

Decide upon a light source - the highlights(tints) on your forms should correspond to this source - The shadows(shades and darker values) will be on the opposing side.

This painting used a wet into wet technique, applying small amounts of paint directly onto the wet paint on the page.

The surface was then touched up with a thin overlay of white and additional black lines to define the edges of the forms.
