Using color intentionally can be one of the biggest hurdles in making art. One must consider intensity, value, and harmony along with all the usual compositional concerns. We begin our study with a color harmony, color mixing worksheet. Below you will find samples from a well completed worksheet if you direction for this assignment.

Transition in value of primary colors
Secondary color mixed from primary colors - transition in values
Color wheel - primary, secondary, tertiary - highlight and transition in each

Analogous Colors - Mixing and Transition of Saturation - 5 neighbors from the color wheel
Monochromatic Value Shifts - from saturated hue to pure tint (pick on color)
Mixing a Shade - one color plus black - decreased saturation from one side to the other - use the same color as you used in the Monochromatic Value Shifts

Color Compliments - opposites on the color wheel
Work with the 3 designated groups to show a gradual transition in value/intensity
Notice that the more neutral values are in the center
Transition from Saturated to a tint from the top to the bottom of the box

Color Compliment Mixing and Shades
Working with one set of complements from the groups above create color and shade transitions - the darkest and most saturated values are at the base of the chart
The purest hues are to the outside edges of the chart

Discussion:

This painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, painted by Dutch master Jan Vermeer in 1665 was created using which set of compliments?

Are the shadows black or a neutral mixed complementary color?

Which analogous colors do you see?

Did the artist use tints or shades?

Do the highlights and shadows correspond to a particular light source?
