Elliptical Perspective:

Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of this assignment will be to get students familiar with rendering images realistically. The previous assignment focused on achieving convincing from and shape of images through the use of contour and cross contour lines. This assignment will take the students a step farther and introduce them to the concept of foreshortening and how cylindrical objects effect the shape of a circle or cylindrical object.

Ellipse Page

Objectives: Students will be able to draw with contour lines, 5 different eye levels of cylindrical jars two from above eye level, two from below eye level and one at eye level. They will understand and be able to explain what happens to a circle when the eye level changes. Students will draw the lip of the jar and the base of the jar in all five contour line sketches paying close attention to the curves of the lip and base and realizing that they are not the same.

Materials: pencil, erasers, and pre-cut strips of manila paper 6 x 18 inches

Sequential Steps and Student Criteria:

- Students will do their studies using pencils and pre-cut strips of paper.
- The studies should show five different eye levels - two with the eye level above the jar, two with the eye level below the jar and one at eye level.
- All the subject's ellipses should correspond to each other do not combine multiple viewpoints.
- Students should draw the entire jar in each sketch, making sure that the lip and the base are being included. Notice that there are often more cross sectional lines than just the top and base of the jar
