In March (2000) a team of 4th graders from Mr. Pettis's class volunteered to spend a sunny Friday afternoon taking math tests. After spending several weeks skipping lunch recess to practice their skills, they journeyed to the University of Washington. When they arrived they were sent to classrooms all over the university. In these classrooms were other 4th grade teams made up of students who enjoyed learning about math. The teams competed against each other for almost four hours - - they had to skip dinner! They answered mental math questions, worked together to figure out problems, and experienced the stifling pressure of College Bowl. When the competition was over the team had earned a 1st place trophy! Oh, and they had a great time.
In the individual event, A. R. was awarded a 1st place trophy for finishing 1st among Kirk 4th graders and a 2nd place trophy for finishing 2nd among all 4th graders at the competition.
If this sounds like a fun event, keep an eye on the Friday Flyer next year and sign up to compete.
