Procedure:

1.      Determine mass of clean/dry 250mL beaker and record.

2.      Add approximately 1 gram Zinc Acetate to the beaker and record EXACT mass of beaker and Zinc Acetate.

3.      Add 50 mL water to the beaker and stir until Zinc Acetate dissolves.

4.      Add approximately 1.5 grams Sodium Phosphate to a clean/dry 150 mL beaker.

5.      Add 50mL water to the Sodium Phosphate and stir until completely dissolved. Warm the solution on a hot plate to speed dissolving.

6.      Carefully pour the Sodium Phosphate solution into the Zinc Acetate solution. A precipitate of Zinc Phosphate is formed.

7.      Determine the mass of a piece of filter paper and record.

8.      Fold filter paper in half twice and open into a cone: 3 layers of paper on one side, 1 on the other.

9.      Place filter in funnel supported above 400mL or larger beaker.

10.  Slowly pour the solution with Zinc Phosphate precipitate into the filter.

11.  Rinse beaker with approximately 25 mL water and pour through the filter.  Repeat until all Zinc Phosphate precipitate is transferred to filter.

12.  When filtering is complete, remove filter paper, place on a labeled paper towel (your name and period), and place on the shelf to dry overnight.

13.  Pour filtrate down drain.

14.  When filter paper with precipitate is dry, determine mass and record.
