The American Literature class will start with the Elements of Literature book (fifth course). During the first part of the semester we will be reading about the earlier literature. We will explore the Puritan influence, discuss Benjamin Franklin's part, and read works like "Rip Van Winkle."
The Elements of Literature book is an anthology that introduces students into many phases of literature: short stories, parts of novels, plays, poetry, etc. For example, we will study the poetry of people like Robert Frost and Edwin Arlington Robinson, many short stories by several authors, plays like "Raisin in the Sun," and we will read different background pieces about the various phases of American history as it relates to literature.
In addition, we will read various novels like Grapes of Wrath and Huckleberry Finn.
The class will also include spelling and vocabulary work on a regular basis. Writing level five essays will be another activity. There will be regular speaking work in the class. Basically the class is what most people would expect from an English class.
We will use the book for the year (off and on).
Assignments: (to be added here later)

This English class is for sophomores. Like American Literature (above) the class works in the basics of English. We will read short stories, plays, novels, poetry, write essays, work on spelling and vocabulary and give speeches.
We will reading works by writers like Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Ray Bradbury, Thornton Wilder, Sophocles, John Steinbeck, etc.
