Who We Are
Family Learning Center originated as a Lake
Washington School District program 12 years ago. It was founded by
a small group of parents who schooled their children at home under
the Washington State Home Based Instruction RCW. This group of
families was instrumental in developing a conversation with the
Superintendent of LWSD to see what support the District could
provide families who made the choice to home school. At the time
there were other Districts in the state beginning to look at what
support could be provided by public schools to parents who were
home schooling. After many meetings and much discussion FLC was
founded. Since then, FLC has grown from operating out of one room
at Gordon Hauck School to our current location and has grown from
twelve families to over two hundred. There are currently over one
hundred Parent Partnership programs across the state. Each of them
is unique based on the specific needs of the students and the
District providing the program.
Over time the state regulations governing our school have changed.
We now operate our school under the Alternative Learning
Experience part of the Washington Administrative Codes (WACs’). As
a result, our purpose and goals have modified. At the same time we
maintain our original vision as a support to parents who home
school. An initiative that greatly impacts our school is the
Federal No Child Left Behind Act. This act mandates that each
State develop standards for all children attending school and in
turn develop an assessment tool that measures each child’s
progress in meeting these standards. Districts are required to
develop a curriculum that teaches these standards to all children
and has tools in place to measure students’ progress annually.
Districts are made up of schools and schools are where the
teaching and learning occur for most children. As a result of
these changes, FLC is focusing more on curriculum that teaches the
required standards to all of our students.
We currently have over 200 families, 250 plus students, and 30
staff. We receive many calls weekly inquiring about our school and
services and have an ongoing wait list of families who want to
enroll at FLC. The school is open 8-10 hours a day offering over
one hundred classes to students Kindergarten - Twelfth grade. In
addition to classes, we provide an ongoing array of services to
parents and students outlined more extensively in our handbook.
FLC is growing, changing, and thriving. Our history will continue
to evolve. The faces change but the dedication to our families
does not.
