Mission and Philosophy...
The
Community School
provides a program which strives for excellence and success in learning
while providing opportunities for each child to realize his/her own potential.
Students are challenged academically, physically, socially and emotionally
in an atmosphere of cooperation and trust.
All learning is done in multi-age groupings.
Our goal is to balance student choice, teacher expectations and parent/child input.
By enthusiastic modeling, we create an atmosphere where learning is fun, challenging and invigorating.
We emphasize:
-
Shared decision making
-
Equal emphases upon social, emotional and academic growth
-
Multi-age classes
-
Interactions between the Youngers, Middles, and Olders classes
-
Problem solving and critical thinking
-
Hands-on learning and authentic application
-
Curriculum as an integrated blend of learning skills and content.
Field trips, speakers, and relevant experiences add enrichment to our themes.
Family involvement is a vital component
of our success. Each family contributes a minimum of three hours a week
to the program. Parents actively help in the classroom as teacher partners
or in the background as support by helping with materials preperation,
lunch ordering duties, break
supervision, library assistance, materials preparation,
and many other important behind-the-scene jobs. Parent committee
work is also significant to our smooth running program. They serve as partners
in determining policy, arrange and conduct tours and help
plan for the future. Without the parents,
Community School, as we know it, could not exist.
