The City of
Redmond Arts Commission and the
Lake Washington School District.
are very proud of their landmark partnership to develop art lessons for
the elementary schools. The project Arts into
Literacy – a Picture and a Thousand Words is a collaboration between
the district administrators, principals, and teachers from each grade
level, librarians, specialists, educational consultants and committed
community volunteers. Funded
by grants from the
Washington State
Arts Commission and the
King
County Arts Commission, the project was awarded $21,500.00 in the
2001-2002 year. The lesson development was lead by facilitators, Susy Watts
and Meredith Essex. The team
met from September through December of 2001 working on lessons for
Kindergarten – Second Grade. In
January of 2002 more than sixty teachers from the six Redmond pilot
schools attended training for the project.
The pilot is currently being piloted in the six Redmond schools:
Audubon, Einstein, Mann, Redmond, Rockwell and Rush.
The Redmond Arts Commission and the LWSD are now
working on grant applications for the 2002-2003 year.
The proposal is to complete the arts program for the elementary
grades by developing the 3-6 grade lessons next year. The LWSD is
supporting the arts adoption by seeking another grant with the Kirkland
Arts Center to create a training module to train the K-2 grade teachers
district wide as the K-2 lessons roll out to the entire district in the
fall of 2002. The project was introduced at Arts Day in Olympia in
February 2002 to an overwhelmingly positive response.
This website has been designed to support the
teachers with classroom resources. Community Art and
Seattle Art Museum references used in some of the lessons are available here. The
Skills and Techniques shown in the Lesson book are reproduced here, and the samples created by the lesson writers can be seen to help teachers
visualize the lesson product.
We hope you and your students enjoy the lessons!
