Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott Elementary is named after the famous author of Little Women. This book is based on Alcott's childhood and the character Jo is based on Alcott's own life. Her family lived in Boston in the 1800's. Her father was a philosopher and educator with many famous friends. Alcott began writing to help the family.

Alcott wrote many other books besides Little Women. She wrote Little Men and Jo's Boys which are based on the same characters as Little Women. She even wrote a series of thrillers to help support her family.

In addition to writing Alcott worked for the rights of women, back in the days when women didn't have the right to vote or even own property. She also served as a nurse during the Civil War.
