November:  In group this month, we have continued our work with number sense, as well as working with measurement.  In measurement, we have reviewed time and practiced word problems with elapsed time.  In addition, we have talked about the systems that measure length, weight, and volume and done some measuring.  These last two weeks, we have focused on money:  counting, making change, and word problems that deal with money.  The students work on and reinforce these skills through the use of the activboard, manipulatives, dry erase markers, paper/pencil tasks, activities, and games.

Activities for home:

1. Games-  We have learned and played two new games in math group this month.  One of the games is easy to make and play at home. Please contact me if you would like the materials or any help in getting started.  The first game we learned was called Bowl-A-Fact.  This game works on math facts.  The second game we played was ATM Action.  This game works on addition and subtraction with money.

2.  Everyday Math- With our current topics, it is very easy to practice at home and around town.  Ask your child what time it is (using a traditional clock).  Ask them what time it will be in an hour, 15 minutes, 120 minutes, etc.  Ask them what time you need to wake up if you want to leave at 8:00am and have 1:15 minutes worth of things to do before you leave.  Have your child go grocery shopping with you.  Practice estimating.  How many bags of chips can you buy if you have $10.00 or $15.00.  Ask them to predict how much change they will get back for their purchase.
