November:  Our second grade reading group just got started this month.  In this group we are working on the five areas of reading:  phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.  Specifically, we work on these skills by following this schedule:

5min:sounding out and reading target sounds, words with those target sounds, and sight words (phonics, phonemic awareness)

5min: dictation-writing words with the target sounds (phonics, phonemic awareness)

5min: vocabulary from story (vocabulary)

5min: read passage or story (fluency)

5min: comprehension questions and activities (comprehension)

5min: game that focuses on target sounds and sight words

 
Activities For Home: 
  • Read the Reading Connections monthly newsletter and try the suggested activities.  Click here to read the newsletter in Spanish.
  • Read daily to your child.
  • Have your child read books at their level to you or a younger sibling.  Reading the same book numerous times will build fluency.
